About this place
Bongeunsa Temple, founded in 794 during the Silla Dynasty, is a historic Buddhist temple nestled in the heart of modern Gangnam. Rebuilt and renamed by Queen Jeonghyeon in 1498, the temple offers a peaceful sanctuary just steps from the COEX convention center. The Panjeon library houses 3,479 wooden printing blocks of Buddhist scriptures including the Avatamsaka Sutra, its nameplate written by the great calligrapher Kim Jeong-hui in his final years. The 23-meter Mireuk Daebul (Great Maitreya Buddha) and the forested temple grounds are particularly beautiful in the evening light.
