The National Theater of Korea, established in 1950 as the first national theater in Asia, stands at the foot of Namsan Mountain in Seoul's Jung-gu district. The complex houses four distinct performance venues: the 1,563-seat Haeoreum Grand Theater, the mid-sized Daloreum Theater, the flexible Byeoloreum Studio, and the dome-shaped Haneul Theater for outdoor performances. Four resident companies — the National Drama Company, National Changgeuk Company, National Dance Company, and National Orchestra — stage productions that reinterpret traditional Korean arts for contemporary audiences. On-site amenities include the Museum of Performing Arts, a cultural plaza, and café and dining facilities. The nearest subway stop is Dongdae Ipgu Station (Line 3), though it is a 20-30 minute uphill walk toward Namsan; most visitors instead take the free shuttle bus that departs from Exit 2 (in front of Taegeukdang bakery) before each performance.
