About this place
Haebangchon, meaning "Liberation Village," is a historic hillside neighborhood in Yongsan-gu that took shape after Korea's 1945 liberation, when returning Koreans and later Korean War refugees settled on the slopes beneath Namsan. The area retains its characteristic steep alleyways and tightly clustered housing, giving it a distinctly layered character uncommon in modern Seoul. An urban regeneration project running from 2015 to 2020 revitalized the Sinheung Market district, which now hosts independent cafes, international restaurants, and small boutiques alongside longtime residents. Rooftop views of N Seoul Tower and the Han River make Haebangchon a particularly rewarding destination for those willing to explore on foot.
