About this place
Sungnyemun Gate, also known as Namdaemun (South Gate), is Korea's National Treasure No. 1 and served as the southern main gate of the Joseon-era capital city wall, completed in 1398. After most of the wooden pavilion was destroyed in an arson fire in February 2008, a five-year restoration effort returned it to the public in May 2013. Conveniently situated between Seoul Station and Seoul Plaza, it is one of the city's most iconic landmarks and a popular night photography spot when illuminated after dark. On weekends, guided tours with a cultural heritage interpreter are available (1 PM–3 PM, on-site registration, 20 persons per session). The adjacent Namdaemun Market, open around the clock, makes for a natural combined visit.
