About this place

Changuimun is the northwestern gate of Hanyangdoseong, the fortress wall that enclosed the Joseon capital, and one of its four minor gates. It was raised in 1396 when King Taejo built the wall, and the gatehouse standing today was rebuilt in 1741. Of the four minor gates, Changuimun alone keeps its original Joseon-era gatehouse, and it was designated Treasure No. 1881 on 2 December 2015. It is also known as Jahamun, after the valley below it. In 1623 it was the gate through which the forces of the Injo Restoration entered the capital. Standing on the pass where Inwangsan meets Bugaksan, it marks the start of Section 1 of the city wall trail, which runs from here to Hyehwamun, and you can still walk straight through underneath it. The Buam-dong and Cheongun-dong neighbourhoods and the Yun Dong-ju Literary Museum are within walking distance.
