Why Google Maps Doesn't Work Well in Korea (and What to Use Instead)

Why Doesn't Google Maps Work in Korea?

Korea is one of the most technologically advanced countries in the world, but its map services operate in a unique ecosystem. For national security reasons, the government has long restricted the transfer of detailed map data to overseas servers. Google has requested data export from the Korean government multiple times, but was denied each time. As a result:

  • Public transit directions are inaccurate -- Bus routes and transfer information may differ from reality
  • Walking directions are limited -- Detailed pedestrian routes are not available
  • Real-time traffic data is lacking -- Road conditions are slow to update

When you search for public transit routes in Korea on Google Maps, the results often show much longer travel times than actual, or fail to find a route entirely. Make sure to have the alternative apps below ready before your trip.

Alternative 1: Naver Map

Naver Map is the most widely used map app in Korea.

  • Real-time public transit arrival info
  • Accurate walking directions
  • Indoor maps (subway stations, department stores)
  • Partial English UI support (changeable in settings, but search results are mostly in Korean)

Alternative 2: KakaoMap

KakaoMap is another popular map app in Korea.

  • Highly accurate public transit directions
  • Taxi fare estimates
  • KakaoTaxi integration
  • Partial English UI support (search is more accurate in Korean)

Download KakaoMap (iOS)

Download KakaoMap (Android)

Both apps can be used right after installation without creating an account.

Can't Find Places in Your Language?

Naver Map and KakaoMap are excellent for navigation, but searching for places in English or Japanese often returns poor or no results. For example, searching "Gyeongbokgung Palace" might show irrelevant results or nothing at all. Many travelers end up finding the Korean name on Google Maps, copying it, and pasting it into Naver/Kakao -- a tedious process.

Konavi solves this problem. You can search and select places in English, Japanese, or Korean, and from the route results, tap the Navigate button on each segment to be taken directly to Naver Map or KakaoMap for turn-by-turn directions.

Konavi's estimated travel times are general estimates based on a public transit API. For actual navigation, use the Navigate button to get real-time directions from Naver Map or KakaoMap -- they are the most accurate. Before starting navigation, check the marker positions on Konavi's map to make sure the destinations match where you intend to go.

Side Note: Google Maps May Improve Soon

In February 2026, the Korean government conditionally approved the export of Google's high-precision map data after 18 years of denial. Strict conditions are attached -- including military facility masking, domestic server processing, and government review -- so it will take more time before Google Maps actually reflects these changes. Until then, we recommend using the alternatives above.
